Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that balances your body so it can heal naturally. It is a drugless therapy that encourages your body’s healing capacity to get you well and keep you well. We use the body’s wisdom to heal you. Acupuncture helps you feel physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
Getting well + staying well = well-being. Health is just that simple.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the painless procedure of placing very fine needles into specific sites on the body to correct imbalances of Qi (vital energy). The free-flowing movement of Qi is both our health and what keeps us heathy. Our Qi moves along meridians that connect with our internal organs; that’s why acupuncture affects the whole body. Needles are used in order to make the energy move. Whenever we experience pain or disease symptoms, it is because energy is blocked. The needles unblock the Qi energy and health returns.
What does it feel like?
Because the needles are so thin, the insertion is virtually pain-free. There is, however, an associated feeling with the mobilization of Qi. Sometimes it can feel like a pressure or swollen sensation, other times it may feel like a trickle of water or electricity moving from one area to another. While perhaps unusual, these sensations will never be painful. Whatever you experience is normal, and a sign that your body is getting into balance.
What happens during an office visit?
The office visit begins with a thorough review of your medical history and a physical exam. After a diagnosis of the problem, treatment begins. Treatment with acupuncture is often combined with heat or electro-stimulation. A session lasts about 1 hour. After a treatment patients often feel a deep sense of peace and relaxation.
What can I expect in terms of results?
Some people experience a dramatic reduction of symptoms right away. Others may require a series of sessions before they respond. Because each individual is different, the response to acupuncture is different. Mostly people experience very positive results within six visits.
Acupuncture is a natural form of healing; therefore your commitment to following through with treatment recommendations is essential.
What about follow-up?
Once you are feeling well it is useful to come in for bimonthly or monthly “tune-up” sessions. Acupuncture deals with the rhythms of your life: sleep, waking, digestion, hormonal, emotional as well as other more subtle energetic cycles. Modern life with its demanding schedules and hectic pace can rapidly wear your sense of balance down. Tune-ups help re-center you and preventively improve your immunity against common illnesses and stress.
